Word Problem - Egyptian False Position Method

Tim's mother has given him money for school supplies and says $18 should be the exact amount he needs. He needs to buy a notebook and one variety pack of pencils. If you can buy five packs of pencils for the same price of one notebook, what is the cost of one notebook? 

One notebook = x

Pack of pencils = x/5

Tim's budget = 18

Equation: 

                x + x/5  = 18

First we'll try x = 5

                5 + (5/5) = 18

                5 + 1 = 18

                6 ≠ 18

                18 divided by 6 equals 3. Therefore, x should equal 3 times our trial number, x = 5.

Now trying x = 15

                15 + (15/5) = 18

                15 + 3 = 18

                18 = 18

Therefore, the cost of one notebook is $15.

    Good try on this, Dylan! But I think you are finding the cost of one notebook plus one pencil (rather than one pack of 5 pencils). Easy to fix this in the question, but be careful what your mathematical assumptions are in the word problem.
